Poets & Prophets lead us into a new world, beyond simply yelling at the old one. – Shane Claiborne, The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical
Across faith traditions, poets and prophets have emerged in times of crisis. In a time when many voices remain superficial, the Poet helps to articulate the pain and questioning born of present dislocation and alienation; the Poet helps the community reconnect soul with Source. The prophetic voice is the voice of truth. The Prophet helps the community cross over to a new level of intentionality and commitment to seeking the Shalom of the communities in which we live and work. But, this work cannot be done alone or in isolation; it requires the support and accountability of community.
Historically, care of soul has been relegated to the faith community, while preparation of the leader has been the responsibility of the business community. The challenges faced in each discipline press for the integration of the two. Our human tendency to create dualities—body and soul, local and global, sacred and secular—has resulted in bifurcated lives. Deep down, we know that the wholeness we long for cannot be known apart from the wholeness of the community. We know that leading with integrity in the 21st century demands that we connect Soul with Source.
